Questioning – a super-power

by Jan on May 17, 2010

The power to question is the basis of all human progress. Indira Ghandi

If I could choose a super-power for every child and adult everywhere, it would be the ability and desire to question themselves and the world; never to assume, but to challenge the status quo,  to say ‘hang on a minute’, to insist on time for critical thought. To ask ‘why?’, and to explore the answers.

This one simple skill, this super-power,  allows us to change our lives, our expectations and our aspirations in ways which can immeasurably improve the lives, expectations and aspirations of others.

What super power would you bestow?

I think… the ability to see the other point of view.

Although that can lead to confusion I know, but probably less conflict in the world in the long run.

Questioning is a great super-power, but in some hands can be a bit destructive esp when turned inwards…relentlessly…

So if I was allowed a second super power it would be a magic wand of kindness including to self. Perhaps I’d make that the first one actually.

Perhaps I should have worked out the answer before writing the comment!

Haha! You caught me out making an assumption there, Joanna! Because my questioning super-power would stretch to asking that too: how does the other person, group, organisation, culture feel about that? How do I feel about that? What does it look like from where they’re standing. And you’re so right, that wasn’t obvious. :) Neither was the question about ‘how does that feel’ – which would surely lead to kindness. But there I go with another assumption!
I think the point I was trying to get to was one about not just accepting ‘that’s the way things are’. Perhaps my super-power would be better defined as ‘curiousity’, from a place of generosity of spirit.
Thank you for your really useful feedback. I love how these conversations grow one’s thinking! x

@Joanna, we’re thinking alike. I would bestow the ability to recognize that often the other side of the coin has the same value.
